About this course

This course teaches how to reach work through people, not only through job ads. It explains how employers hire through networks and how to network without feeling fake, starting from the network a learner already has. It covers a professional brand and a short introduction, showing expertise online, outreach messages and follow-up, informational interviews, contacting employers directly, including calling the contact person before applying, and working with recruiters, staffing agencies and employment services. A final module covers keeping a network alive, including for people who are shy, new to the country or out of work. The capstone is a networking plan, put into action with real outreach and informational interviews.

Many jobs are filled through referrals and direct contact, sometimes before they are advertised at all. Newcomers and career changers often have the smallest network in their new field, and the most to gain from building one. The course turns networking into concrete steps a learner can take each week, and that a counsellor can follow with them.

  • Practice on real tasks and an applied assignment

A certificate that lists the skills is issued when every section is completed and the applied assignment is submitted.
