About this course

This course teaches how to sell a skill as a self-employed professional. It starts with what freelancing and light entrepreneurship mean, why a freelancer counts as an entrepreneur even when invoicing through an invoicing service, with Finland as the worked example, and what to check first when freelancing alongside a job, studies or a job search. It then covers defining one clear service, packaging and pricing it, finding first clients through a network and freelance platforms, a simple portfolio, proposals and quotes, written agreements, invoicing through an invoicing service or as a sole trader, late payments, taxes, insurance and records. A final module covers managing several clients and knowing when to grow into a larger business. The capstone is a service offer, a price list and a proposal for a first client.

Freelancing is often the first step into self-employment, and the one with the fewest set-up steps. It still carries the obligations of running a business, and learners who know them from the start price their work properly and avoid surprises with taxes, pension or unemployment benefit. Questions about benefits are always for the learner’s employment area and unemployment fund to answer; the course shows what to ask them.

  • Practice on real tasks and an applied assignment

A certificate that lists the skills is issued when every section is completed and the applied assignment is submitted.
